Track IR vs. Tobii
In my personal experience, I cannot recommend the Tobii Eye Tracker. As an eye tracker, it’s fantastic. As a headtracker - it’s terrible. Tobii has a lack of headtracking responsiveness compared to TrackIR making it unfit for high intensity tasks like lowflying and PvP. I experienced dry eyes and eye aches from the IR (I suspect because I have light blue eyes). For the price, I - in good faith - cannot recommend Tobii to anyone.
What is Track IR?
Track IR is two things:
A name brand head tracker, and more importantly, it’s also used to describe a camera tracking 3 IR LED’s.
How expensive is head tracking?
The head tracking that I use can cost you less than $50.00 USD, you will need to purchase an after market PS3 Eyecam, and a simple head tracking clip. The ultimate goal is a low resolution, high FPS camera. You may already have what you need! You can test any webcam by using a normal TV remote, pointing it at your camera, and press a button on the remote. If you see IR on the camera, then you are in luck! All you need after this is to setup OpenTrack!
Please, if you want to know more about head tracking, ask me. I am always willing to help, and I do not want to see people spend more money than they need to. I own both options, and I still prefer Track IR.
